Love DirectTV. Have been a subscriber for about 8 months now, it has gone out maybe twice (for a brief period) in bad weather. I would never go back to cable.
I just got an HDTV myself last week (34" WEGA tube). I bought a DVR but DTV informed me that I would need an HD DVR if I wanted to record on the hi def TV. So, the DVR that I bought will go upstairs, no big deal. The HD DVR is $499 so consider yourself warned. I would recommend calling them first to find out exaclty what you will need equipment-wise. They offer the big 3 networks now via dish but you have to obtain a waiver in order to receive the signal. The best part is I will get my hometown networks if the waiver goes through (I live in TX now).
Good luck with your decision.
