Driving San Diego -> NY -- tips?

Hi everyone,
So I'm setting off on a drive from San Diego to New York City, where I'll be for the summer. Any tips?
What's the best way to get there? I took the southern (AZ, NM, OK, MO, IL, IN, OH, PA) route on the way out, but also hear the central (NV, UT, CO, NB, IA, etc) route is good. What's the fastest? I'll probably be bombing out as fast as possible.
Which raises the next point. I've got an '04 9-3 Arc. If I'm driving long, extended hours in it (figure 12-14 hrs a day), what precautions should I take with the car and how should I minimize any damage or wear/tear on her?
Thanks in advance!
