Yes, platform engineering can be done right with enough differentiation. Many of the things you notice on the Malibu (that you didn't like), are things that many American car buyers like such as a soft ride, effortless low end steering, coasting instead of engine braking. I'm not sure how you knew the rotors were warping, but either you should have used a lower gear to begin with or the rotors are undersized or poorly ventilated. The lack of steering directlness that you experienced is the electric power steering, which can be done right. Saab uses conventional hydraulic power steering. I test drove a Malibu Maxx a couple of years ago and I didn't like some of the interior materials, but man that thing can move and it gets great fuel economy for a V6, (revs low at highway speeds).
