A platform is a nice big unit onto which lots of other stuff is hung. How it is hung depends on what the car is supposed to do.
A number of folks on this board have bemoaned the fact that Saabs share a platform with other GM models, thinking this has genericized the brand. What it does is lower a portion of design and manufacturing costs and enables the cost of R&D to be amortized across multiple brands. It's a practical engineering and manufacturing decision.
As turrbo notes, it does not mean that a Saab built on this platform is a rebadged anything. The Malibu is built to do a certain job and to many people it will be fine. It's just that if you are used to something better you really notice the shortcomings.
I think most people who are used to American cars will think the Malibu is just ducky. I think it is a penalty box. FWIW, I commented on the brakes to the woman at the rental counter. And she said they get that comment all the time.
