I just returned from a trip to Norway and Britain. For 2 1/2 weeks in the UK we rented a Vauxhall Vectra hatchback that is essentially the same car as a SAAB 9-3 (different sheet metal, but pretty much the same mechanically) and found that it shared the major fault (IMO) of the 9-3, a busy, punishing ride, with few of the virtues such as sound insulation and fairly high-quality interior materials. It is one of the most unpleasant cars I heave driven in a very long time. The upcoming large Saturn will be a version of this car. I haven't driven the Malibu or G-6 so cannot comment on them, but it seems that GM just made the Vectra a made it cheap and nasty 9-3. I would assume that the Opel version is identical.
The only things I liked about the car were the hatchback body, good steering and strong, naturally aspirated 2.2 gasoline engine.
For what it's worth, for a week in Norway we had a Peugeot 407 diesel wagon that was a wonderful car. Comfortable, roomy great ride, good handling and 55 mpg in a car that would be a 9-4 in terms of size.
