Recently rented a Malibu and can't say I had a similar experience. Except for the seats, which were too low in the car, I didn't notice any of the things you did. It got great gas mileage (30mpg) tracked as well as my Viggen, was somewhat down on power, and the brakes were fine. I was driving in Fl at speeds in the 80mph range for 1K over three days. I would say that the steering was too light in parking manuvers but firmed up once the car picked up speed. Overall, for the price of a Mailbu, I can't be too critical of it. I doubt that it requires the maintenance of my Viggen. I'm not new to Saabs, having been driving them since the days of the two cycles 93B, and am somewhat disappointed in the lack of quality control I have experienced in my Viggen.
