Like taurus-sho, I had a Pontiyuk Sunbird (same as the Cavalier). It was pretty good, basic transportation. The Sunfire (Sunbird replacement) and Cavalier can be found relatively inexpensively.
Another that I like is the Ford Escort, say the last 2-3 model years. Fairly reliable (basically a Mazda Protégé) and very cheap.
Lastly, my 1996 Toyota Corollover was one of the best cars I've ever bought. The only reason we sold it was that we had "grown" out of it and were ready for something a bit more up-scale. We put 180k miles on it and the only thing we ever had go wrong with it was the contact points on the starter (a $25 fix). Take a look for the sister car the Geo Prism. Build in the same factory, on the same line as the Corolla. Should be equally reliable but cheaper due to the Geo name.
consumerguide.com has a pretty good automotive section that you should look at for the cars that you are considering. They list things like common issues, and model year changes.
Good luck!
