Amusing history on the present Focus.
Short list:
Another Focus, but get a sedan or wagon as they are more likely to have had reasonable treatment.
Geo Prism: same as a Corolla
Mazda Protege
IMHO, go subcompact. Buy a Taurus or similar. They are durable, safe and actually work pretty well. You can get one with 100K on it for short money.
One thot: Instead of spending $4K, spend less on a car needing some work and put new tires, battery, belts, hoses, etc into it right away. Gives you more of a known quantity. I did this with my daughter's Saab 9K and it was a good move. Now I don't think about her car and it needs little. Have a total of about $3500 into it including tires, brakes, exhaust, mounts, radiator, etc. I tinker with it once it a while, that's it. JMHO
