Which subcompact for girlfriends daily duties?

Gang,
Need some input.
My girlfriend needs a car to get to work. Her family recently relocated and I have been assigned the task of selling the following family clunkers;
1- 1994 Chevrolet Caprice Station Wagon approx. 100K , recently serviced
2- 2002 Ford Focus ZX3 hatchback, approx 50K, sport suspension, alloys and exhaust.
I expect to get $1,000 for the Caprice and hopefully $3,500 for the Ford, let's say $4,000 total all told. I need to turn this four thousand into a gas friendly compact vehicle, no other monies can be set aside so it's four thousand tops. It must have an automatic transmission and A/C.
This car will be used exclusively for sub 40 mile trips, we plan to keep it for four years; basically it will be used for approx. 8K miles a year for three to four years for a total of 25-35K miles. I like late model year high mileage vehicles with forgiving highway mileage.
I did a little research and found the following appealing, I'm looking for 2001-2003 "exceptions" with plenty of miles 70-90K
- Mitsubishi Lancer
- Mitsubishi Galant (older 99-01 models)
- Ford Focus
- Dodge Neon
- Huyndai Elantra
- Huyndai Accent (*gulp* although I can't stand the though of putting a loved one in this soda can)
Nissans and Hondas have high resale values....we have a Saturn SL1 and I'd rather pedal......the Lancer is a nice car but not very popular so the preowne selection is small....suprisingly the galants are cheap and plenty....but you have to go back a year or two...still anything 99 and up has the new body style.... I'm going to procure this 4banger via eBay (within a 300 mile radius) and will also take a trip to Manheim in PA with a dealer to sort though the inventory there. I don't think I'll have a problem finding something there buy the eastern european "gentlemen" that take you there are crooked and settling on a price is a hassle.
Any comments, suggestions to avoid or to look consider are very appreciated!!! I'm leaning towards the Focus because of the large supply of them.... I'm going to detail one of the cars (the V8 2MPG caprice) this weekend and list on ebay.
Thanks for your time!!!!
MM
