Ethanol content gumming up fuel systems?

I was talking to a German car indy today, and he said he's had a lot of cases of fuel systems gumming up in very short spaces of time this summer due to ethanol content. His recommendations were to use only Shell or Sunoco as they add the Ethanol at the distribution center, whereas others add it at the station (can lead to an inaccurate %). The problem is worse on cars with fuel pumps in the fuel tank. Cars with carbs, mechanical fuel injection seem to do the worst. People are returning from vacation and their cars won't start. Adding fuel stabilizer only makes it worse.
I have read on here that Shell V-power is not suitable for use in turbocharged cars. I don't know how true that is, maybe somebody knows something about that? I did try V-power when it came out first, and I noticed a definite loss of power in my 9000T with it. I used a few tanks of it, then read that it wasn't suitable for turbos, so I never used it again. The German car indy hasn't heard of any issues with Audi or VW turbos running V-power.
I'd love to hear other's experiences.
