I saw a message recently posted by an Exxon employee. He is one of they guys who does gas station pump/tank maintenance. His post included a message from Exxon corporate on the effects of Ethanol introduction in the stations. Exxon said that the Ethanol could dissolve all sort of stuff in the systems and tanks. The techs were instructed to change the filters at the station approximately 3 weeks after Ethanol was introduced as Exxon expected them to be dirty and clogged after that time - but they also expected that all the gunk would be broken loose by then and there would be no further problems.
There was no mention of the effects on vehicles but one can expect a similar occurance - start using 10% Ethanol fuels, lots of stuff comes loose. You can change your fuel filter after 3 weeks but in a car there is a lot of line left after that point... some some stuff is going to get burned in your engine.
I seem to recall there was another note about Ethanol causing water (always in gas station tanks but typically seperated and not flowing out) becoming more of a problem with Ethanol in there. I forget the details of that issue.
