I bought a 1991 E320 4matic wagon with 170k miles on it in 1999 for $12k. Perhaps like you, I thought that with good service records a Mercedes basically lasts forever. Plus there had been $5k worth of work on it in the last two years. I averaged between $2500 and $3000 per year in maintenance and repairs on that car over the 4 years I owned it. I sold it with 220k miles on it for $5k, and felt I was lucky to get that. Mike is right, any car with that many miles will need a lot of work every year, and Mercedes are so complicated that I found it MUCH more difficult to do any work on it (even brakes are complicated).
