2500 miles of highway driving is the best type for a car. It's that nasty stop and go driving that kills up. Locking the cruise at 80 isn't much strain on anything... Just stay away from big trucks and such that throw up road debris, and keep your baby's nose safe. :)
I've driven cross country at least seven or eight times, and I've enjoyed it every time. My STRONG advice is to set aside a full week for the drive. It won't take that long, but don't be pressured by time. Stop every night, don't short-change yourself on lunchbreaks, and don't push it. It's really easy to get into the whole "I can make it to the next city" thing, and not only does the driving become a task, but you also run the risk of driving when your body and mind aren't up to task. You'd hate yourself if you crashed into a tree or drifted into oncoming traffic because you driving while tired. I usually try and break the trip up into 600 mile "segments" and pre-plan where I'm going to stay. I don't always do it, but it helps me know when to stop.
The last trip I did was from Newark to Sacramento (in my Alfa 164Q) and it took four days, driving about six or eight hours a day, and enjoying a comfortable bed and a couple good meals each day. Travelling was a pleasure, not a job...
Bring a cell phone, a couple good maps, a nice selection of music or books on tape (there aren't radio stations everywhere), a pair of comfortable walking shoes (just in case... :), and a cooler for snacks & drinks. Take a buddy if you can... Ain't nothing wrong with shelling out $400 to fly your friend back where s/he came from.
