Hi,
A couple of other things too,
San Diego, if you do the Zoo, take the bus tour, ride on the top deck, it's open so make sure hats and sunblock. This makes the zoo about a half day vs whole day. The only thing you miss is the huge Aviary where you walk into the cage, and then downhill on the switchback trails - very cool. You should go back for this, birds flying around free. Other 2 items are the sealion show in the amphitheather and the building with the snakes, basic square block with glass faced "cells" on the outside with the various reptiles on display.
San Diego, be sure to drive out to Cabrillo Point at the end of Pt. Loma, views across the bay to North Island Naval base, Coronado, South Bay, and all the way to Mexico, can go down the north side of the point to the tide pools and see marine life left in the pools at low tide.
Coronado - if you saw the movie "Some like it Hot" with Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, and Marlyn Monroe - where they went to florida in the girls band with the guys dressed as girls... the hotel was actuall the Hotel del Coronado - very cool - pictures in the halls of other movies shot there too, as well as the various Presidents and other notables that stayed there. Nicest beaches in the south. Can drive right to the curb and on the sand in 30 feet, another 200 or so to the water.
Legoland? about 15 minutes from my house, and about 30 or so from the famous Mike Lynch at Continental Motors in Oceanside, you drive past it going to legoland at carlsbad. The are about a 15 minute detour off I-5, that's the freeway you will be on for much of your trip. It starts at the Southern Border at Mexico, and goes all the way to Canada!
Don't know if you've done Disneyland (not world), the original is here in Anaheim.
Long Beach, the spruce goose and the queen mary.
If you come down the coast until LA you can go past the Naval Installations in Oxnard. There is a really great display outside the gate at PT Mugu, a GERMAN V-2 in US paint job! along with other planes too. you can continue south from there and skip over to Hollywood and Vine, see the Growmans (spelling here) Chinese theater, Rodeo Drive, and then go to Disneyland.
It's about a 10 hour drive with 2 pit stops from San Diego to San Francisco, perhaps you drive south seeing all the sights and then do a one day back?
It's about a 500 mile trip from The City to San Diego depending upon your route.
Up North you may consider a day trip to the Giant Sequioas. Do a google on them. General Sherman and Grant. Enough wood to build 500 houses if memory serves...
The coast route down through San Simon and Hearst Castle is full of great curves so get a good car!
Also any of the California Missions would be both fun and educational (part of US History and the Spaniards). Monterey Cannery, John Steinbeck.
Maybe take in a baseball game at one of the parks? San Diego, Anaheim, Los Angeles, Oakland, San Francisco,
San Jose - the winchester mystery house!
San Diego and others - Sea World - several years ago added a walkway in a tube at the bottom of the tank - get to sea fish AND sharks swim right over you.
I'll send you others as I think of them.
