The town of Big Sur itself is somewhat inland, but the road that goes through it is specatcular on either side. Just south of Big Sur is Nepenthe which is a couple of spectacular overlook restaurants and a nice gift shop. After Nepenthes southbound comes Lucia another nice restaurant. About a mile or so south of Lucia is a well kept local secrect, the New Camaldoli Hermitage, a silent Catholic order located at the top of the hill. Take the spectacular narrow road at the sign up the hill and visit the gift shop where one of the monks is a world famous artist and visit the chapel. Another hour or so south is the Hearst Castle. I'm not sure you could get from SF down to the the Hearst Castle and take one of the tours all in one day. Maybe if you left really early. Do contact Hearst Castle and make a reservation for a tour, or better still, spend all day and take two tours, Hearst Castle is worth it. There is a small block of inns near the Castle entrance.
