Get off at Santa Claus lane and have lunch at the Padaro Beach Grill. Good, interesting food and astounding picnic area on the Pacific.
A little bit further south is Capenteria- "safest beach in the World" if you have kids. Walk the main street to get a feel of California Beach cities of the 1950's.
A bit further south take highway 150 (from 101) toward Ojai and Santa Paula. A great road for driving and it will connect again to 101 in Ventura.
Do not forget the Aquarium at Monterey- a lot more fun than you think.
Around Oxnard leave 101 to connect to Hwy 1 go past Point Mugu toward Malibu. I never get tired of that coast. You can stop at the MoonShadows-Mel Gibson's hangout. You'll end up in Santa Monica - play at the pier and get back on the Freeway.
Avoid LA 0700 to 0930 and 1400 to 1800 hrs. Great trip.
