I have owned nothing but Saabs since 1987, and wil likely buy or lease another one this Fall. That being said, the build quality, reliability and cost to repair Saabs is poor, relative to most Japanese brands. That's why the resale values are low, and that is a big part of why the brand never gained the momentum it should have in the 1980's, when it was so far ahead of the pack with respect to front-wheel drive, safety, versatility, etc. (Note that Saab has lost many of its relative advantages since then, such as being the best winter car, as there are numerous AWD vehicles. Also, other brands have made great strides in safety).
As Saab owners, we may choose to deal with the frequency of repair issues and related costs, because we like other things about the cars, but I think we do the company a disservice when we are in denial. The quality could and should be better. The ways of assuring better quality are well understood and well documented. What is required is the commitment and discipline to manage the entire production system (design-procurement-maufacturing, etc.) Toyota and Honda have made that commitment. If Saab could maintain the characteristics that allow it to stand out from Japanese competitors, while matching them on quality, it would gain marketshare and would be able to sell the cars for close to MSRP. A home run!
