A few observations from owning a pair of Saabs ('95 and '03, not the SS)
What would be more telling would be whether the '04 + 3 years has improved. Those of us who bought Saturns in the early 1990s had the guinea pig feeling, that while customer service and fuzzies were given, reliability has horrible, and even worse, things never got fixed as the model years went along (how many years did it take Saturn to finally fix the oil consumption on the DOHC? many, if ever)
Same here. If the first model year problems were fixed swiftly, and do not show up in cars 3 years later, then some progress has been made. Judging from the slowness in getting NG900 fixes rolled in, I have my doubts.
Finally, the real dependability is not 3 years and out, it's out of warranty costs for the common mortal. I'm sure that some independent shop could do a McGyver chewing gum fix on my AC for $19.95 (5th AC repair in 11 years).
What's better (or worse) is the lack of troubleshooting skills at the dealership. All of these weigh quite heavily against purchasing a 9-3 in the near future.
