... as well as all the other tips - uphill if there are carts, in and end space, in those spaces with extra on one side due to a pole or other obstruction, etc.
It's strange though - if you park somewhere away from the other cars, whether it's far or a closer, people always park all around you. Sometimes I will park a ways out and come out and find four other people parked immediately around me.
I attribute a lot of it to people being unwilling to be leaders and instead like to follow. Once you park father away you have shown that it's OK to park there, so the more timid will park near you. You see them on the highway too: The highway will have long patches of empty road with groups of cars all huddled together in packs. You even see people driving 20 feet off the bumper of other cars for miles when there are massive open sections between the packs. They just don't want to be out there on their own.
