Wish I could remember the reference, but read recently that it is actually much safer to set the mirrors wide as described above, than to be looking over the shoulder. Lots can happen in those few seconds, and studies have shown you have better control of the car and better attention to what is going on in front of you if you can simply glance in the mirror to see what is going on beside and behind you.
I've been using the wide set mirror arrangement since hearing about it on Car Talk a few years ago. It works! I have virtually no blind spots now, and can easily track cars from well behind to corner of the eye vision. It takes some getting used to, but once you begin to realize how much better your field of vision has become, you'll not want to switch back.
Ever notice how some folks seem to slide up on your left quarter and just sit there in your blind spot perfectly pacing you? I used to do a lot of driving, and almost got in a couple of accidents from these folks. Hard to see even with a glance over the shoulder. No more, I follow these folks right up till their bumper passes right by. Much safer for me.
