My personal opinion is that a hot tub in the basement is not a good idea. Hot tubs put out alot of steam as evidenced by the major icicles that hang off my hot tub cover every winter. Mold would surely be a major problem in an already damp environment where steam is being produced 24/7.
As for your concerns about being unhealthy for men, perhaps you should speak to your family physician. I can personally attest to no ill physical affects of an hour spent in approximately 102 degree water but then I'm done in the baby making department, if that was your specific health concern. My guess is that the 20 minute recommended maximum shouldn't pose a problem.
A chlorinating sanitizer from Walmart is all my wife and I use in our hot tub and it keeps the water perfectly clear and clean. I can't recommend any one brand over another though the Hawkeye 7 person tub we have is great. Five years later we've had zero leaks. The only part replaced has been the pressure switch which I did myself. It was a 10 minute job.
Whatever brand you get, the more jets the better. Seriously. It makes all the difference in the experience of a hot tub. Don't skimp on them. And there's nothing like sitting in the hot tub outside on a cold January night with the steam rising and the snowflakes falling or the stars shining overhead.
One last caveat. Be prepared for a $50 or more rise in your electric bill every month, depending on where you live.
