Manual Transmission / Clutch Driving Techniques Posted by iveand [Email] (#3155) [Profile/Gallery] (more from iveand) on Tue, 2 Jan 2007 12:33:27 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I am trying to determine if I am driving a manual transmission properly. My biggest concerns are in extending transmission and clutch life as long as possible. I am not concerned with a "sporty feel" or other performance tips, but simply trying to extend an older car's transmission / clutch longevity. I prefer a manual for the mileage effeciencies / control, not for the peformance.
Here are my questions:
-Should I hold the clutch (disengaged) in while stopped at a light or put it into neutral and release the clutch (engaged)? (subsequently having to press on the clutch a second time when shifting back into gear after the light turns green.
-When coming to a stop from high speed (5th gear), should I slow down until rpms getting low, then push the clutch pedal in (disengage it), put it in neutral, release the clutch pedal? Or, again as above, simply put the clutch pedal in and hold it?
-I currently have largely discontinued "downshifting" when coming to a stop. I do this by in large because my reading seems to indicate that "brakes are cheaper than transmissions. Use brakes to slow the car, not your transmission." Opinions?
Obviously the main question is "do you limit the number of times you disengage the clutch, or limit the total TIME that the clutch is disengaged"?
Thanks for any advice,
