My gentle shifting style came about when I drove BMW's of a certain vintage (the 70's) and couldn't afford a clutch or tranny job. Of course, there's been a huge leap in technology and reliability since then, but old habits die hard.
Like others, I don't keep the clutch engaged at a stop. I blip the throttle to match revs when downshifting, (but I don't always downshift, sometimes just throw it in neutral and let the speed decrease, especially when going up an offramp) and I usually double clutch on the downshift. Really make an effort to upshift smoothly, too. I generally try to limit the total time the clutch is engaged.
I haven't had any clutch or manual transmission problems in the last 15 years or so.
