When you idle with the clutch out (engaged), the input shaft to the tranny is spinning. On many Saabs, the reverse gear has no synchro rings, so if you press the clutch, then shift into reverse immediately, the input shaft is still spinning in the tranny, so you'll here it grind. You can prevent this by a) waiting longer before putting the car in reverse, or b) put the tranny into a forward gear, (which all have synchro rings) to stop the input shaft, before you put it in reverse.
The resistance you feel when putting the car in 1st after it's been in neutral is for the same reason... the resistance is the synchro ring slowing the input shaft to a stop. Again, waiting a moment before engaging a gear will eliminate that feeling of resistance. All in all, though, it's no big deal.
I hope I've answered your questions.
Cheers,
Peter
