I've never really relied on Carfax information. I certainly look at it especially if the car is some distance away but never relied on its accuracy and use my own judgment as the final deciding factor.
I had a somewhat similar situation with wrong Carfax information. We purchased a Jeep Wrangler that had a mileage discrepancy as reported by Carfax. Basically, when the vehicle was inspected but the state during one of its annual inspections the mileage was 'fat-fingered' and showed an extra 100k mileage (115k instead of the correct 15k). I wasn't concerned after looking at the vehicle; it was obviously an error. I briefly looked into getting the record corrected but as you discovered it's nearly, if not entirely, impossible to do so. I never looked into if further because I didn't really care and was not an issue when we sold the car, I was up front about it and again, it was obviously a clerical error.
So, I would still recommend using Carfax (or an alternative) but certainly not rely on it. Still use due diligence and have a mechanic look at any car you're seriously considering. Sorry to hear about your situation.
