Carfax has given people a false sense of security. They ASSUME (dangerous word) that the info Carfax has or doesn't have is totally complete and accurate; if you read the fine print you soon realize it's mostly smoke and mirrors.
As a buyer, it's your responsibility to inspect a car, learn everything about it and make sure you know what you're buying and you're willing to buy it at the agreed-upon price. You yourself said the car was clean, and you willingly paid full retail (which I'm sure you realize is a mistake in any case). That was your choice, Carfax was just one tool to be used in coming to that determination.
I'm being a little rough because they have created this aura of all-knowing and all-powerful Carfax in their ads, but they are far from it, and people need to read them with several grains of salt. My friend saw that his trade-in was CPO at a local dealer and he linked through to the Carfax report which came up as totally clean. Only problem was, the car had been in 2 major rear-end collisions!
