Hi. Please read the below.
1. you are supposed to put new tires on the rear as the rears will lockup on weight transfer to the front under heavy braking. Even if you don't heavy brake, say you let off the gas on an ice road (watch all of those stupid videos on the evening news where those reporters are there doing *nothing* save *make* news) and as the drivers let off the gas the rear end brakes away. Why? because the automatic transmission is slowing down the rear wheels faster than the fronts which are free wheeling. It's a little like hitting the emergency brake just a touch.
2. IF you are only doing two tires put them on the rear.
3. IF you have been doing your rotations then this would not happen, plus you'd get more miles on the tires. Sorry, it's true.
4. You really need to do the rotation since being a front wheel drive the car is harder on the tires mounted on the front.... so if they are worn appreciably more than the rears that makes the rears in better shape (duh..) and the better shape tires go on the rear... this means you can't rotate and will get poor tire life. It's like catch 44 (2x catch 22).
5. Perhaps consider getting four new tires of a less expensive, but yet good quality. I've moved some of my cars from Dunlop and Michelin to Kumoho or Generals.
