Someone will likely contradict this (topic has been discussed here before), but you want the tires with the greatest traction, i.e., the new ones, delivering power to the road. So, fwd: mount on front; rwd: mount on rear. Don't mix old & new from side to side, e.g., don't put a new tire on the left rear with an old on the right rear. If it lends any credibility to this advice, I learned about this listening to Car Talk.
Ideally, replace all 4. Having different tires front/rear can upset the handling properties of the car because there is more grip @ one end than the other.
To avoid the predicament of having 2 good tires & 2 treadless ones, rotate them regularly (~5K miles). I do it every oil change: takes <10 minutes.
If I were short on money, I might call around to some auto recyclers and price a full set of used ones. If set on buying just 2, @ least try to get the same brand/model as the older ones.
