...when the snow hits people don't adjust their driving. They just don't process the information that the roads are slippery. We have all seen accidents, but some people just don't get it.
It is not just SUV's. I passed plenty of cars stranded at the sides of the roads. We all do. It is just that SUV's are more noticeable, and people also notice what they are biased against. Many people on this BB are anti-SUV. I respect that, I just don't agree with it.
When I drive my SUV on the snow I drive slowly. Before I get onto the highway I jam my brakes a few times on the neighborhood roads (when no one is behind me) to see if I skid or the antilock is malfunctioning, and to see how far it takes me to stop from 20 and 30MPH. Sometimes it is over 50 yards (the space between 2 light posts in Brooklyn). If it is really bad I drive slower on the highway and I drive in the right lane because Ari is correct that SUV's have lotsa' momentum.
In my Trans AM I know I will fish tail so I never get on the gas. In my Saab I know I have no antilock so I pump the peddle to prevent skidding.
I am in my young 40's. When I was 19 I did not do these things and I got scared a few times, but I was lucky. I still have a lot to learn but experience teaches some people. Others not so much.
My $0.02. Your mileage will vary.
