Why not check your luggage? As a fellow frequent business traveler, the guys who stuff those giant carry-ons into the overhead bins leave no room for those of us who have laptop cases and / or briefcases. I absolutely hate it when people like this get on the plane, stuff their giant carry-ons wherever they want (not near their seat) and walk away leaving me no room.
In hundreds and hundreds of business trips, I've had checked bags misrouted twice. As you said, though, plane side check is also easy and convenient, but I would not leave your laptop in the case for plane side check. I make sure my laptop is in a removeable case inside the main case so I can pull it out.
Thanks for letting me vent, and I sincerely hope you're not one of the people I mentioned above!
P.S. If your bag is as big as you describe, it _may_ fit in a CRJ's overhead bins but not likely an ERJ. I took a Fairchild commuter jet last week. Their bins were pretty small, too.
