I'm probably one of the people you hate.
I also travel a fair bit (about 50-60K a year) and avoid checking luggage whenever possible. I used to check it but I've come to travel lighter and don't like the hassle of waiting for bags--especially when arriving back at my home airport at midnight when all I want is to go home (airport has slow luggage service late at night).
I use a legal carry-on that fits in the overhead and pack it tightly so I can go for 4-5 days with it. I carry my computer in a backpack that can go under the seat in front of me or in the overhead if there's room.
The only advantages I see to checking luggage are you can move through the airport more quickly if connections are tight, and you can take a Swiss Army Knife or multi-tool with you. I don't mind having to roll a bag with me and keeping track of it. And I notice in airline clubs--the haunts of lots of heavy travelers--that most people seem to be using carry-ons.
Being able to just get off the plane and go has a lot of advantages and I reduces some of the hassles of biz travel. When you get re-routed or delayed and your bag goes into limbo, as happened to 2 colleagues on a trip to Munich last month, your realize how nice it is to have done the trip with a carry-on. Sure, it doesn't happen all that often, but it's like carrying a spare ATM card when overseas. You don't realize the value until you see a friend's only card get eaten by a foreign ATM on a Saturday afternoon.
I appreciate your sentiment about people who fill up overheads with luggage. Real PITA! But if you fly a lot you surely must be in an early boarding group so you can get on and find a place for your bag.
