My unintended "experiment" went like this:
When our son was still riding in car seats, we bought some of that tinted vinyl cling sheet that you can apply, remove, & re-apply to another window when the direction of the sun changes. So we had this sheet covering about 1/4 of the rear window & it snowed on the car. After the snow stopped we had maybe 1" covering the car & windows. It was just a short period of time before the snow had melted off ONLY the tinted section of the rear window, while the rest of the window was still completely covered.
Since the tint is applied to the inside of the glass, the heat captured by the film radiates both into the glass & the interior airspace of the car. You could lessen the effects of heat absorption by applying the film to the outside of the glass, but then it wouldn't hold up very well.
