whose bikes run them somewhere in the $6000+ range. $800 for the fork alone and a $2000 frame is about middle of the road (for upper end bikes, that is).
But honestly, there is a "get what you pay for" aspect to bikes just as there is in autos. Some of these guys are bombing straight down the sides of mountains going 30-40 mph via ridiculously dangerous lines. Would you really trust your life to a $600 wally world bike? I have seen everything from simple parts snapping to complete wheel disintegration to all out frame failure. If you are really going to push yourself, you do need a certain level of quality.
I have ended up in the hospital several times. Had I been on a bike that sustained a catastrophic failure during any of the incidents that put me there, it probably would have been a casket instead of a hospital bed.
