First of all, what about Trek bikes don't you like?
I'm not too familiar with Gary Fisher, except to say that I'd consider one.
I had a pre-trek Klein ('93 Fervor, it was stolen) and I replaced it with a '98 Attitude Race. I have to say it is one of the nicest hard tails I've ever ridden. While Trek moved Klein's manufacturing to WI, and (for a short period of time) re-labeled some Trek frames as Kleins (Pulse, I believe), the Klein frames have been unique in design, manufacture, and geometry. You put Shimano/SRAM/Campy components on a bike, and the frame is what identifies the brand. I've yet to see an Aluminum Trek with Klein's welding process, or internal cable routing. My road bike, a Chehalis, WA built Klein ('02 Quantum) is nothing short of art, and that's definitely a Trek-era bike. And, it rides very well, responsive (and yes, stiff, much like yours, I'm sure). Klein's (As in Gary's) Aluminum alloy (Called ZR9000) has found it's way into Trek frames because, yes, it is that much better with fatigue life. My current (And recently built-up) ride is an '04 Klein Palomino. There's nothing Trek about that bike. In fact, it's a Turner/Maverick design, which Klein licensed and built. If I ever felt like my Kleins were gussied-up Treks, I wouldn't have paid for them. But, as Saabpilot mentions, the likes of a Turner, Rocky Mtn, Moots, etc. get too expensive for some.
I hope I didn't come across too defensive (I probably am, anyway ;o)
Hey, most of us drive cars which are kinda the same as Gary Fisher or Klein. Isn't your 9000 CSE a little past the pre-GM era?
Happy trails!
