If a tree falls on a car ... (long)

My girlfriend left her new car at her house while she is on an international business trip. It's a small cottage in a summer beach community. I went to the house today, and noticed a bunch of sticks on the roof of her car. Upon closer inspection, there were several good-sized dents on the roof, along with some scratches. A neighbor across the street came out to tell me that a large branch from a tree at the house next door had fallen on the car. According to her, the owner of the house had the branch removed from the car, then cut up and hauled away.
The owner of the house arrived this afternoon, and I expected her to come talk to me. But instead, she remained inside, and didn't answer the door when I knocked earlier this evening. Another neighbor told me that the owner feels that the car is parked on her property (it's not), and that she has a note from her insurance company stating that she is not reponsible. This other neighbor also suggested to me that I not move the car, but didn't want to elaborate (I haven't moved it - didn't bring the keys with me).
Sorry for the long story, but before I try to speak with the owner again tomorrow, does anyone have any experience with a situation like this? I'm disappointed that there wasn't a note waiting, or that she wouldn't have just come over to dicuss it. Whose insurance should cover this? It's frustrating because I can't reach my g/f until tomorrow, so I can't even call her insurance company.
Thanks.
Robert
