Obviously it depends on where you live but in my eyes, you're far better off going solar than wind. Wind is pretty unreliable but if you don't have many obstructions (trees and tall buildings) the sun tends to be more consistent in many parts of the country. But yes, wind is commercially viable - to those who sell the systems.
I won't go on my anti-wind soap box as it's not well received here but if you're looking at alternate sources, do a lot of research about the pros and cons of both wind and solar. For a residential situations I think solar is _typically_ a better choice.
Also, if you have neighbors, you might want to feel them out. A co-worker just installed a wind turbine at his house (out in the country - no neighbors) that he purchased on ebay from someone whose neighbors complained and made him take it down. From what I've heard, it cost my co-worker around $35k to install his wind turbine (I can verify the cost this week if you want more details).
