well, any company will think it's commercially viable if they are actually selling and making money. otherwise they go out of business.
certainly wind turbines are very controversial. in Vermont, there is a lot of pressure to use non-conventional energy sources, but ALSO a lot of pressure to not "mar" the scenery. so this is a delicate balance amongst these camps. we'll see how it goes, as some of the smaller turbines are showing up, and zoning laws vary.
I'll admit, I was surprised recently while driving on US11 near Malone, NY, on the northern edge of the Adirondacks to see a large COMMERCIAL farm of large wind turbines. I didn't find it specifically offensive but I don't live there to see it every day. I'm not sure what the local issues were there when that project was initiated.
Clearly the world needs alternative energy sources. We actually need BREAKTHROUGH discoveries to replace petroleum as our primary energy source, since we have, by some estimates, used over HALF of the world's petroleum. If that's true, we will deplete the petroleum in the globe in not too many more years. Solar (and the company I mentioned sells solar also) is another option. In this part of New England, solar is limited much of the year. In the winter, days are short. Much of the year, we have reasonable cloud cover (I don't know the stats). So attempts at alternate energy sources are essential. All these options will combine to help, and contribute to our energy needs. Electricity has become essential in most of the world, and (with a few exceptions) we all have become totally dependent on having electricity available at all times.
Hopefully breakthrough discoveries/inventions will come soon, and become commercially viable. Ultimately they'll become essential. Meanwhile we'll see these options as viable as we make them...
Peace.
