OT: Things to consider w/ mid-career employer change? Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Fri, 26 Oct 2007 04:50:54 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I received a job offer last night from Wake County Schools in NC. The offer was less than what I had hoped for, almost insultingly low, but not quite to the point of being an immediate "No!".
If I accept I will be retiring from my present employer w/ 30+ years of seniority, collect a reduced pension and some retirement benefits, combine this with the new salary for ~10% more than my present pay, work another 12 to 15 years, then retire from the 40 hr/week world with two pensions and two benefit packages - one public sector , one private sector.
Of course this job change requires relocation (no assistance provided), sale and purchase of homes, new job for spouse, lots of uncertainty, etc.
We will be doing lots of number crunching this weekend revolving around increased pay, increased benefit costs, increased housing costs, reduced commuting costs, impact on future pensions and savings, etc.
What else needs to be considered? We are both very unhappy with our present employment situations in distressed and declining organizations.
Has anyone else made this type of drastic move at the 2/3's point of their career voluntarily, without a major financial incentive? What has been your experience?
Thanks in advance.
