One thing to consider is that, with a public sector job like a school system, you are probably establishing a floor for your salary level. For a smart, well educated person, you could expect to move up the hierarchy reasonably quickly, if you wanted. Also, in a high-technology area like RTP, you might expect some opportunity to present itself in the future that you might not be aware of while living in Michigan. Another area to consider is the Greenville-Spartanburg area in South Carolina piedmont. BMW, Michelin, Wabtec (the old Westinghouse Air Brake), plus many other manufacturing facilities are all in that stretch of Interstate 83.
The key is to move to a growing area with expanding opportunities.
