Breaking in a mechanic--Would you?

I'm 75 miles from the nearest dealer, 100 from the nearest Saab indie. A local mechanic, who has a very good reputation and all the computer software but no Saab experience whatsoever, is quite willing to learn. He is even willing to let me order parts myself, and then charge just for labor, which is quite a bit less here than in the city.
So using the local guy, I would save money, time, and hassle driving to a mechanic; but I'd lose Saab expertise. I'm thinking of letting him do the 60K service on my '02 9-3. Would you?
