20 year old anything........ Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] (#81) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mike Lynch) on Mon, 12 Nov 2007 18:45:36 In Reply to: Classic Saab drivability, No Snaab, Sun, 11 Nov 2007 10:06:22 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
It's tough driving a 20ish year old anything. Rubber stuff like vacuum hoses deteriorates, plastic stuff fatigues, seals dry out, crud builds up, wires chafe, and what's worse is that the older the car the less it gets driven which amplifies the problem.
Driveability wise it was the 70's that were an issue, not the 80's. By the 80's, the first Saab 900 was 1979, everything was fuel injected and the cars all ran fine hot or cold. Any 900 is a fine running car available with all the semi-modern stuff, power stuff, good AC and so forth, but for example a 900 never came with a power tilt and slide roof or power seats IIRC. Never mind Bose or Harmon Kardon sound, memory seats and mirrors, auto dimming mirrors and other gadgets, many 900's were very basic, even AC needed to be ordered.
It can be pretty rewarding to keep and old Saab or other car in serviceable condition and in general it seems old Saab folks don't generally stress out too much on the cosmetics as cracked dashes on 900's are sorta' standard equipment.
There's a lotta' good old time Saab turbo feel in a 9-3. Sure the windshield ain't so round, but it's got the classic 3 and 5 door styling, with opera windows in the 5 door, still plenty quirky, but a 9-3 has all the airbags, ABS and such, and is still less than 10 years old with very good pricing.
Or heaven forbid, check out a 9-5. The early ones 99-01 have a very classic old world Saab feel, rich wood and leather, but still a dash look right out of the 900. And 9-5's come with all the very useful luxury toys that we've spoiled ourselves with.
