This guy's interview with NPR is worth listening to. He claims to have been driving in the low 90's much of the time, but when out on a desolate stretch of highway (he gives Oklahoma as an example), he would push it up. I have to say that I see people going in the 90's all the time in Chicago, sometimes over 100. I think that over 100 in Chicago has got to be more dangerous than even 140 on a desolate stretch of highway.

As for the ultrawide Autobahn idea, in the U.S., adding extra lanes has no effect. Drivers still occupy the left two lanes and leave everything to the right unoccupied. So a 3-lane road really is equivalent to a 10-lane wide road. In Europe, drivers understand lane usage, so higher speeds can be utilized more safely.
