My point is that a long road w/o exits...

...might help speed up transit and help truckers and long distance drivers. Ususally traffic is due to problems at the exits/entrances. A superhighway would eliminate multiple exits in favor of exits every 10, 20 or 50 miles. Those exit areas need additional lanes and capacity to allow for cars slowing to exit and speeding up enter the main highway. A highway like this would also act as a magnet for 18 wheel vehicles, thereby removing them from other roads. That also alleviates congestion on more traditional roads.
Fuel consumption would drop, polution would drop, delivery times would drop, overhead for businesses would drop.
Our current transportation system is not efficient. Public transportation is suceptible to terrorism, so it is not the only answer. We need to improve public transport while also improving driving infrastructure by creating better highways and byways. That was the whole idea behind eliminating route 66. Aside from sentimental concerns, traffic patterns were improved.
