The link originally given has a link to the NPR interview with this guy. There's no mea culpa and no admonition to "not try this at home." He makes some ridiculous comment that if everyone were to replace the radio in their car with a CB, accidents would be cut in half. Excuse me??
He clearly knew what he was doing was dangerous, but I think he over-dramatized the danger. Not over-estimated, mind you, but over-dramatized. He took each of his parents aside privately and said his good-byes, also apologizing for having to say good-bye. Like he's going to Iraq, for crying out loud. I find his self aggrandizing to be the most irritating thing about his stunt. IMO, a meaningful record is one that pushes forward either technology or human performance. His record really has no meaning.
