This has crystallized what I think I already know - that I really don't want to make this move. We are all brought up to aim to be successful in life, and being "successful", in the conventional wisdom, is in part measured by your career (and bluntly, how much money you make). It was more that I feel I ought to want this career progression than that I really wanted it. I enjoy my current job, make enough money to keep my 3 Saabs (and one volvo) in good working order, I am home almost every night and I don't lay awake at night stressing about work. Life is pretty good.
To answer some specific questions, I don't think rejecting this opportunity will hurt me too much in the future. I have more or less been promised a partnership position in my local office, but I have to wait for others to retire (which shouldn't be too long now), so it is more of a deferral than a rejection. It might make it harder to take a head office type position in the future, but i don't think I really want that anyway, and we are early enough in the process that I haven't really wasted a lot of people's time yet.
Thanks again for everybody's help - I knew I could count on the Saabnet community to help me think this through!
