Inverters versus a display power source Posted by Herb Hirsch [Email] (#114) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Herb Hirsch) on Thu, 27 Dec 2007 06:38:26 In Reply to: Inverters...how it works on cars?, Saab D aka Volvo D, Thu, 27 Dec 2007 06:15:26 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
INVERTERS: These are used to convert 12VDC (your car's battery output) to 117VAC. 117VAC is what is available in your house to power lights, appliances, etc. Their output is usually rated in watts (watts = voltage times amps). In evaluating which inverter you plan to use you have to look at the wattage requirement of the device versus the power (wattage available) output of the inverter. An inverter CANNOT be used to keep a battery charged….something will smoke and be damaged.
POWER SOURCE FOR DISPLAY: Your car's battery is the best source of power while your car is on display. The real question is how long it'll provide adequate power. Headlights use a lot of power and will drain your battery over a period of hours. Parking lights are much kinder.
If you've run the battery down somewhat you'll need a jump to get going. A long drive will bring it back. I once left my headlights on (non-Saab) all day...and ended up with a dead battery; a one hour drive on the highway brought everything back to normal.
