They are called "solid ink" printers and the ink sticks (essentially a type of crayon) are melted as needed, then squirted through the print heads. The ink really does have a waxy feel on the page. Colors are vibrant, but you do have to be careful about folding a document, as the ink can and does crack, but regular toner also cracks, so no biggie. Cracking is more likely on heavier stocks.
The solid ink Phasers provide a much better prints of photos than any of the low end lasers, but they do cost a good bit more. I didn't get one because of the cost, and I don't need the monthly volume they can handle. Note that Xerox uses the name "Phaser" for both solid ink and toner machines.
I think Xerox a smaller laser that can do 11 x 17, but going to that size is never cheap. You can go to xerox.com and poke around. Buying direct works well, BTW. I did and it came very fast, and you even get a call from a sales rep to make sure things are OK. And they have deals on toner that they email you about.
Mine (a 6250 model, now it's the 6130) installed and was up and running in about 20 minutes, including running a new wire from the printer to the wireless router. Do note that the Xerox printers are almost all network ready. Not so with many others. Check this when you compare. The Xerox was much less than the similar HP when you added network capability to the HP.
I did have a warranty claim. They sent a new machine overnight. Painless.
