Toner is just finely ground bits of a specialized plastic/polyester, but its characteristics vary widely depending on the manufacturer. Copiers tend to have hotter fusing temps than laser printers. The solid ink in the Phasers is totally different, and is not really meant to be run through a fuser in a copier. You might have better success doing the photocopying, then printing the color side on the printer.
This is general a problem with many laser printers, as the fuser section of the copier or printer reheats the toner on the front side. The better printers can usually do this OK, as the fusing temps are compatible with the toner, but copiers typically have higher fusing temperatures.
The risk you run over time when duplex printing (both sides of a page) on machines not meant to do it is that you can shorten the life of the photoconductor drum or belt, neither of which are cheap.
