$83 for a battery is quite cheap. You never mentioned what size and rating that battery was, but that could be a factor, too. I'm actually surprised a Duralast lasted that long.
FWIW, I paid more than twice that price for my Optima battery, and I am expecting it to last 4-5 years. If I paid under $100 for a battery, I wouldn't expect it to last more than 2 years.
Funny story: I went to an Autozone (listed as an Optima dealer) when my old battery died looking for an Optima. They didn't have any, but the manager offered to let me buy a Duralast, drive around with it until I found an Optima (this was the day before Thanksgiving), then return it the next week. It was really nice of him to offer this, but based on that policy, I wouldn't buy a battery from that Autozone.
Another funny story: Another local Autozone did have the Optima battery I wanted. When I got to the store and saw the battery, it was missing the cover, the terminal caps, it was scratched to sh*t, and there was green corrosion on the posts. I told the guy that it was a used battery, he told me they all look like that when new. Uh huh. I ran the hell away from Autozone, found a Batteries Plus, and bought my Optima. I will never go to an Autozone again.
