Car warranty catch-22

What does one do when a clear defect is being called normal by the manufacturer so that the manufacturer can avoid having to deal with the problem. The manufacturer argument is that a normal issue is not a defect. Of course, that is a nonsense argument as I could under design something so that all of the items are defective, but still "normal" due to the original design. A defect is a normal design gone bad.
Any good options other than court?
I have intentionally kept this vague so the defect doesn't cloud the logic.
